Standard: 2.MD.1
• Measure length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as a ruler, yardsticks,
meter sticks and measuring tapes.
Objective (Explicit):
• By the end of the lesson the students will be able to correctly identify the names of the
measurement tools. (ruler, yard stick, meter stick, measuring tapes)
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
The students will be able to complete the worksheet with 90% accuracy.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
• Demonstrate meaning of measurement
• Students will be able to measure items using other items like: Paper clips, pencils, hands, foot,
or finger

Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
I want to measure my desk. What can we use to find out how big it is? Have you ever used your
hands to measure something? Well today, we are going to learn a new way of measuring things.

Instructional Input Teacher WillTeacher Will:
Hold up a ruler and have students say the name: “ruler” A ruler has 12 inches. Show ruler under document camera and show them how big an inch is. When we are going to use a ruler to measure something, we always start at the zero. Put a pencil under the document camera and show them how to measure it using a ruler. Hold up a yard stick and have students repeat the name. A yard stick measures in inches. It is about 3 feet long, which is 3 rulers end to end. (Model) Hold up a measuring tape and have students repeat the name. Measuring tapes come in a variety of lengths. They can be very long or short. Our measuring tape is about 5 feet long. Hold up a meter stick and have students repeat the name. A meter stick has centimeter and millimeters. Show under document camera or have one at each table. Check for understanding: Hold up each measuring tool and have students do rally coach with their shoulder partner. They will say the name of each tool when it is held up. Partner A will say the name and Partner B will coach if necessary, and say if they think the tool can measure big or small items. Teacher will hold up the next tool have students’ switch roles. Teacher will model how to measure a book with a ruler-think aloud. |
Instructional Input Student WillStudents will repeat the names of the measuring tools as the teacher instructs.

Guided Practice Teacher WillTeacher Will:
As a whole class we will measure how tall the smart board is. Ask students what tool should we use to measure it? You will have 30 seconds to tell your shoulder partner what you think. (Timed pair share) Call on a few students to check for understanding. We just learned about the meter-stick, yard stick, ruler, and measuring tape. Ask students what end of the measuring tool do we start at? Tell your shoulder partner, coach them if they need. Call on a couple students to check for understanding. Guide the whole class in measuring the smart board using a yard stick. Where should I start measuring? Show how to hold the measuring stick correctly, starting at zero. If the object I am measuring is longer than my measuring tool, I need to mark the object, or use my finger to hold my place, and then keep measuring. I will write down how long each side of the smart board is on a piece of paper. If one side of the smart board is longer than 1 meter stick, then I need to add the two measurements of the one side to come to the whole length |

Independent Practice Teacher WillTeacher Will:
I am going to give each of you a yard stick and ruler. You will be measuring your notebook, pencil, a crayon and the height of your desk (show what height is by modeling). You need to choose the right tool to measure each item. Have students’ measure items on their own to check for understanding. |
Independent Practice Student WillStudent Will:
Use a ruler to measure a common object. They will write the length of the object on their worksheet. They will measure a notebook, pencil, and crayon. |

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:
Today we learned about some new measuring tools. Can you remember all their names? Tell your partner two tools, and then your partner will say the other two tools. When would we want to use some of these tools? Share your thoughts with your partner for 30 seconds and switch. Call on a few students. Share with your partner -what tool you can use to measure your room?
