3rd Grade Measurement and Data Summary
· Students extend telling time to measure intervals of and lapsed time
· Measuring liquid volumes and masses of objects is introduced
· Students represent and interpret data using bar and picture graphs.
· Students begin to examine measurements of length in terms of fractions.
· Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition.
· Geometric measurement: recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and calculate perimeter using addition and by counting unit tiles.
Materials: Clocks (telling time/measuring lapsed time), number lines(used to calculate intervals of and lapsed time), scales and containers(measurements of weight in relation to mass and volume), rulers(measurements using fractions), base ten blocks(for building planes to understand area and perimeter by using unit tiles), graph paper(drawing planes to calculate area and perimeter), rubber bands and geoboards(representing perimeter of a plane), authentic objects for measuring perimeter (tables, walking the perimeter of the room, etc.)
